play crack the sky.

there’s a storm a coming.

living in virginia beach/norfolk my entire life, i’m sort of used to the constant threat every summer of a massive angry tempest wiping out my city. this is something that i just kind of live with, i think about it occasionally, but i mostly just go on living my life until it looks like it’s going to get really dangerous. then i just sort of sit around and ride it out. luckily, this only happens once every four or five years.

irene.

but it looks like our luck has run out. unfortunately, florida isn’t going to block us from this one and it doesn’t look like it’s going to suddenly jump over in to the gulf of mexico. irene is expected to make landfall in north carolina saturday morning/afternoon and be in norfolk by saturday evening. right now it is a category 3 [which terrifies me] because hurricane katrina was a category 3 and it was responsible for over 1000 deaths.

i live in that pink area labeled "extreme threat"

our last major hurricane was isabel back in 2003 and it was only a category 1 or 2. that knocked out power for over two weeks. i really don’t want to deal with this again. hurricanes are awful things that shouldn’t even exist.

i would prefer a zombie apocalypse  because you kill zombies with guns and fire and they are a tangible enemy. i can’t kill weather. i can’t remove weather’s head or destroy it’s brain.

this is stupid.

it’s my senior year. i don’t want to deal with my classes getting postponed and i really don’t want to be terrified for a few days while i pray that my apartment building doesn’t flood or collapse or a tree doesn’t fly through my window and impale me. i also don’t want the power to go out. i just don’t want it to happen.

solution.

let’s just move norfolk and virginia beach [i saw this in a spongebob episode once]. we’ll just push the cities out of the way, maybe further inland, and we can just avoid the flooding and the winds and the death. you’re welcome.

as for me.

i’m going to go build a log cabin in the woods. that’s what lumberjacks do.

but in all seriousness, be careful. this hurricane isn’t anything to mess with. go buy some supplies and stuff, be smart, evacuate if you feel necessary. as for me, i’m going to sit in my apartment, enjoy the electricity until it goes out, and probably sleep a lot.

take care.

heavy rotation – 10.21.10

October 21st, 2010 § Leave a Comment

a bit of an off week.

not having what could be considered the “best” of weeks. i’m not sad or upset about anything, just feeling kind of unmotivated. today i’m actually pretty sick.

i walked in to my professor’s office this morning and he said to me “wow, you look like shit.” to which i replied “umm…thanks”. then he told me to go back to my room and sleep and that my absence was excused. college is wonderful.

but all of that is no matter. let’s get down to business.

this week’s heavy rotation.

1. you can play these songs with chords by death cab for cutie: this was their first album, back when they were still a blossoming indie blip on the radar. ben gibbard has proven to be something of an indie rock success story and really changed the way people look at indie music. the success of dcfc also forced people to accept that indie bands can become popular and still be wonderful. and good news – ben gibbard said to

expect a new death cab for cutie album in spring of 2011.

tracks to listen to – “champagne from a paper cup” or “that’s incentive”

2. blue sky noise by circa survive: anthony green is possibly one of the most talented and successful drug addicts to ever pick up a microphone. his voice is easily recognizable over any other singer. his music is amazing. and he and his wife just gave birth to the messiah.

side note: i know what you’re thinking “but cody! every rock band from the 60s/70s/80s was on drugs and they were good!” and you’re wrong. most of what happened between the 60s and the 80s wasn’t music – it was a series of seizures and sound waves. that’s it.

tracks to listen to: “get out” or “fever dreams”

3. absolutes by barcelona: i saw barcelona in concert a few years ago and they are some of the nicest dudes around. this album is practically perfect and is definitely one of the best albums of 2007. the album reminds me a lot of high school, but i can look back on it now with completely different eyes.

tracks to listen to: “time to mend” or “fall out of trees”

4. sometimes things just disappear by polar bear club: i heard about polar bear club in alternative press in an article about hardcore/punk bands that no one knew about. their name is awesome, their music is pretty good, and i look like i belong in that band. i met them at warped tour this summer and they’re genuinely nice dudes.

tracks to listen to: “heart attack at thirty” or “eat dinner, bury the dog, and run”

5. invented by jimmy eat world: i finally got my hands on a copy of the new j.e.w. album and it is phenomenal. i’m going to write a review for it soon. but just know that it is a really impressive piece of music. well worth the wait.

tracks to listen to: “anais” [available on the deluxe version of the album] and “invented”

red dead redemption: undead nightmare.

that is the list for this week. send me your suggestions and what not to theindielumberjack@gmail.com.

enjoy your day friends.- the lumberjack.

my next post: i’m going to talk about some video games. i’m a nerd. it’s what i do.

zombie ep.

the devil wears prada - zombie

outbreak.

it is no big news to anyone that zombies are possibly the coolest things that have ever eerily shuffled across the plains. the past five to ten years should be considered the Great American Zombie Renaissance [i just coined that. that is mine]. filmmakers like george a. romero and edgar wright, and  writers like max brooks should be applauded for the incredible works of fiction [and awareness] that they have produced in the recent decade.

not to mention the scores of wonderful video games that have been released as a result of this phenomena.

  • resident evil [1996-2009] – i have a whole post in mind for talking about resident evil.
  • left 4 dead [2008 & 2009]
  • dead rising [2006 & 2010]

i said all that to say this.

on august 24, 2010 the devil wears prada released their first ep and it is pretty much amazing. i had all of their other albums, so it just made sense to buy their new album [and not just buy, i pre-ordered that jam].

merchnow was doing a deal on their website that included the ep, a comic book, and a sweet tdwp tshirt for like $20 so you better believe i bought that. the big surprise was that they included a signed copy of the ep [i squealed like a little girl].

i’ve been listening to nothing but this pretty much since i got it today and it is so well done. it is a little darker than their previous records. the subject material is a zombie apocalypse of course and that is no joking matter.

no joking matter.

to be completely honest, i’m really impressed with this ep. i know it is only five songs, but they’re all fantastic. this was probably the best $7 i’ve ever spent on an article of music.

the thing about the devil wears prada is that they’ve only gotten better over the past four years. their first album dear love: a beautiful discord was really good [for a debut album]. their next album, plagues was also incredibly well done. their last album, with roots above and branches below was practically perfect.

track list:

  1. Escape
  2. Anatomy
  3. Outnumbered
  4. Revive
  5. Survivor

i’m completely ready for their next full length album to come out, which i’m hoping is either by the end of 2010 or at the earliest the spring of 2011.

i give zombie ep a 9 out of 10.

next time.

i’ll be talking about some things, and maybe even some stuff. thanks for tuning in.

cody.
