lumberjack news – 2.1.11

February 1st, 2011 § 1 Comment

welcome to the lumberjack news.

this week’s “news at a glance” type thing is pretty much a big story about egypt, as well as some other things that i think are particularly important/funny/interesting that i think you should know about.

sit back. enjoy.

waking masses of mummies.

i almost feel like i should devote all of this segment to the growing turmoil and possible catastrophe that is brewing over in the middle east/egypt because the world is going nuts.

protests started on jan. 25th when thousands of citizens were fed up with poverty, government corruption, unemployment, and being ruled for the past thirty years by their dictator, hosni mubarak. these protestors used twitter to organize the locations of their protests and to gain more followers (that pun was intentional).

so what do you do when your citizens are protesting you? you shut down twitter, facebook, cell phones, text messaging, fax machines, and essentially all ways of gaining support and communicating with the rest of the world. good job, hosni. -ed.

who do the people want to take over the country now, though? the answer is the former head of the iaea [international atomic energy agency] and nobel prize winner mohamed elbaradei. he is a moderate, most likely wants democracy, and [to my knowledge] would support israel. he no longer lives in egypt but has since returned to lead the protesters.

egypt is practically israel’s only ally in the middle east. fear is that if a anti-israeli government is established in egypt, the middle east will change it’s name to the missile east and the world will end.

oh, and did i mention that mr. mubarak hasn’t been in the country for practically any of the days that this protest has been going on. granted, i’m not surprised at this at all because if my entire country was carrying signs that told me to “go to hell”, i’d probably hide my tail between my legs and gtfo of egypt.

the military now has control of the country, mubarak is “running” things from an unknown location. i looked at like…twelve articles and all of them either said nothing or speculated his whereabouts [one said london and one said turkey while another said he was in the united states].

wherever you are, mr. mubarak, don’t go back to egypt. gracefully step down, let mr. elbaradei take the reigns, and live out the rest of your life knowing you tried.

new information: hosni mubarak will not be seeking re-election in the fall.

for more on the story go to any news media website on the internet.

snowmaggedon.

on this side of the world, the united states is bracing for what might be the biggest snow storm since…a month ago. there are reports that cities like chicago could see over two feet of snow within 24 hours.

of course, news media outlets are blowing this storm in to what can only be described as…

snowmaggedon.

but it is really just a big snow storm. nothing too big to worry about, especially since it is states that are used to a lot of snow [pennsylvania, new york, vermont, illinois]. virginia isn’t going to see any snow at all. thanks appalachian mountains.

for more on the snow, check out weather.com.

video games might make your kids fat, but it makes them smarter.

studies show that these made me smart.

i would first like to say “suck it” to everyone that ever thought video games made “gamers” stupid or lazy or socially awkward. a recent study shows that gaming makes people smarter and helps them with logic and reasoning skills.

however, studies did not find anywhere that gaming could help you lose weight. running in call of duty sadly doesn’t burn any real world calories. there is also a chance you will still be socially awkward, too…but that is kind of your own choice.

this study is a very good thing though, because maybe it will show all of those strict parents that letting their kids play video games won’t make them idiots.

but please, don’t let your kids play grand theft auto until they can accurately tell the difference between what is fiction and what is reality.

that’s all.

hopefully you know more things now than you did a few minutes ago. as always, feedback is welcomed.

this is going to be kind of a “news at a glance” type thing where i pick some news stories that i think are particularly important/funny/interesting that i think you should know about.

ping.

September 2nd, 2010 § 1 Comment

new social networking? yes please.

so i discovered today that iTunes started a social networking site and to be honest…i may have peed my pants a little. [okay a lot]. so of course, like any other normal person i set out to make myself a profile on this new avenue for bitching about my life. i was thinking “hooray! new people to complain to about the random horrible things that happen in my life!”. but my tinkering with ping has left me confused and unimpressed.

ping social network.

ping was launched by apple in 2010.

just like a crack addict…

i pretty much jump through flaming hoops to update/access/check my social networking sites [twitter/facebook/etc.]. and yes, i realize this is a sad way to live life but i honestly can’t help it.

however, when i’m not near a computer or i’m away from the internet, i can function just like a normal member of society.

seriously…i update twitter and facebook like…a dozen times a day [seperately].

but anyway.

i made a ping today. and…well…it is kind of…i don’t know…terrible.

basically it is like a more personal version of purevolume. i mean, i love purevolume because bands post music and all that sort of stuff, but i don’t really need another one.

so how do i actually feel about ping?

i hate it. like, it is cool that i can follow bands and my friends and stuff, but i can do that on twitter…and facebook…and tumblr…and myspace…and every other social networking site that has ever existed forever.

i mean don’t get me wrong, i love Steve Jobs and Apple and the iPod and iTunes and everything like that, but this was a stupid idea. i use my iTunes to listen to music, to buy episodes of adventure time, and to make mix cds. i don’t want to follow bands and chat with my friends.

they just need to fix this and make it more interesting. right now it just seems like something i don’t want to update/check…ever. maybe it’ll break the hold that social networks have over me.

that is all i have to say about that.

i’m off to update facebook.

our little boy is growing up.

My dear friend [and one of our fantastic writers] is growing up, folks. Its true, little Terence now has his own website and let me just say, it is the coolest idea/concept I’ve heard in a long time.

The website is called “Smile Like You’re Dead Inside” and essentially all you do to get on the site, is smile…like there is no more breath in your lungs and no more songs in your heart. The sheer magnitude of the sites launch was incredible. Within a few hours of launch, there were dozens of “happy” smiling faces on the site. [Yes, I was one of those faces.]

Me...smiling...like I'm dead inside.

Trying to smile like I’m dead on the inside was actually really hard [which was weird to me] because it took more focus than I imagined. I figured I could just fake a smile and be all dandy, but I looked either a.) too dead, b.) slightly retarded, or c.) like I was faking.  But I finally came up with the perfect picture [VALIDATION! YEAH!].

Anyway, this morning, Terence had an interview with www.thestar.com, which is an online newspaper [to my knowledge]. He told me [and the rest of Facebook/Twitter] that it went pretty well.

So…I’m impressed. Terence had his site up for LITERALLY two days before he had an interview with someone important. I’ve had this site for…almost two years…no interviews for Cody. But I’m proud of you Terence. Good job! [please don't stop writing for us].

I’m posting something else later today or tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Cody.
