songs you should have on your iPod – september 2, 2009.

September 3rd, 2009 § 9 Comments

Well it’s September now. The site had a pretty good month last month. You guys have been faithfully keeping up with the site even when I can’t update it…so thank you very much.

It’s also Wednesday which means I’m tossing some downloads your way. Here is some candy to feed your ears.

#1. “Assistant to the Regional Manager” by The Devil Wears Prada off of With Roots Above And Branches Below. I’m really in to The Devil Wears Prada now and I’m completely okay with that. I think that With Roots Above is the best of their three albums [Plagues (2007) & Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord (2006)] but I haven’t listened to all of A Beautiful Discord yet. This is one of my favorite songs from them. —> Download!

#2. “Holiday From Real (Live from SIR)” by Jack’s Mannequin off of The Glass Passenger. I love Jack’s Mannequin. I’m a big fan of Something Corporate. And I think Andrew McMahon might be one of my heroes [he had intense throat cancer, was told he'd never speak again let alone sing, and he fully recovered]. This song is really great, and it makes you think. —> Download!

#3. “Summertime” by Mae off of Destination: Beautiful. I felt this song was fitting. Goodbye Summer ’09…I’d be fine with you never coming back.
—> Download!

#4. “This Is Who We Are” by Hawthorne Heights off of If Only You Were Lonely. I figured I’d give a throw back to some old (sort of) Emo music. Enjoy kiddies and reminisce to the days when painting your nails black and wearing black hooded sweatshirts was considered cool and socially acceptable. —> Download!

#5. “Summer of ’98″ by The Secret Handshake off of One Full Year. I love this song. You will too. —> Download!

#6. “Crunchy Black Did Me In At Midnight” by The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza off of The Electric Boogaloo. My dear friend Terence got me in to Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza a few months ago on our way to Best Buy. This isn’t my favorite song by them by any stretch of the imagination, but this song is still pretty legit. —> Download!

#7. “California Love” by Tupac off of 15 Years On Death Row. I first heard this song as a cover done by My American Heart [on the Punk Goes Crunk album] and then a few days later, I heard it on the radio in all of its Tupac glory. I like that he mentions practically every city in California, almost like a geography lesson. Thanks Mr. Shakur. —> Download!

#8. “10 Signs You Should Leave” by Emmure off of Goodbye To The Gallows. I just started getting in to Emmure. This is the song Kelly suggested first and it got me interested…so I figured I’d try the same. Enjoy? —> Download!

And possibly one of the bands I’m most excited about discovering…

#9. “Comfortably Confused” by I See Stars off of 3-D. I’ll tell you all about I See Stars in an upcoming post, don’t you worry. Just download the song, and don’t ask questions. Enjoy. —> Download!

Well that’s the list for the week. I hope you enjoy. I tried to get a little better mix this time around. [SOMEONE complained about the same bands being on there repeatedly...which I guess could get annoying.] Anyway, enjoy.

Gay Marriage Cartoon.

My next post…

I kind of want to talk about Gay Marriage…but it isn’t really music related. Should I talk about it?

songs you should have on your iPod – august 5, 2009.

August 5th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

Wow, it’s almost been a month since I’ve written anything. Sorry about that.

Well here are this week’s suggestions, enjoy.

#1. “Iron In the Backseat” by Daphne Loves Derby off of Good Night, Witness Light. Over the past few days, I’ve been looking for new music and in comes Daphne Loves Derby. Aside from having a campy name, the band is really good actually. I really like their singer’s voice and I think you will too. —> Download

#2. “Apology” by Alesana off of Punk Goes Acoustic; Vol. 2. Alesana is also a recent discovery of mine. The only thing about this song is that I like the acoustic version a lot better than the non-acoustic version. If you want to search for the regular version, be my guest. But this is the version I prefer. —> Download

#3. “I’m Made of Wax Larry, What Are You Made Of” by A Day To Remember off of Homesick. A Day To Remember was suggested to me by a friend so I took her advice and looked them up and well, I really like them. This song is really good (which is why it is on this list) —> Download

#4. “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” by Gnarls Barkley off of The Odd Couple. Let me first begin by saying I love Gnarls Barkley. He was on an episode of The Boondocks (Favorite show ever possibly) and he was an awesome representation of a Baptist preacher. Anyway, this song makes me cry when I hear it and it is one of my favorites.  —> Download

#5. “Faces In The Hall” by Gym Class Heroes off of The Papercut Chronicles. Gym Class Heroes…what to say about them. Well, I met them, so that is a good place to start. They are actually pretty nice guys (and Travis [their frontman] has really sweet tattoos and piercings). This song has a legitimate message and it has risen to the top of the list by them. So enjoy some classic GCH. —>Download

#6. “If It Means A Lot To You” by A Day To Remember off of Homesick. Yes, another song by A Day To Remember. This song is really pretty. It has a sort of duet feel (probably because it sort of is a duet). Enjoy. —> Download

#7. “Echoes” by Set Your Goals off of Punk Goes Acoustic; Vol 2. This is another case of me enjoying the acoustic version of a song more than the regular version. Set Your Goals is also a new discovery of mine (most of these bands are suggestions from the same person). Anyway, if you want the regular version, go get it. Here is the acoustic. —> Download

#8. “The Fight Song (Crash and Burn)” by Mae off of (a)fternoon. This song feels like the story of my life. —> Download

#9. “Be Calm” by fun. off of Aim and Ignite. There is a FUN story behind this song. (sorry for the pun) fun’s new album doesn’t come out until the 24th of August…which makes me feel bad for having this song on my laptop. Even though this is my favorite song off of their new album, I’m not going to post it on here. If you want the song, you have three options.

  1. Wait for Aim and Ignite to be released August 24.
  2. Politely ask me to email you the song.
  3. Torrent the album yourself.

#10. “Hackensack” by Fountains of Wayne off of Welcome Interstate Managers. I heard this song at the end of the movie “Just Friends” and it made me smile a bit, so here it is. —>Download

Well, that’s all folks.

Cody.

My next post…

Aim and Ignite. I’m reviewing Aim and Ignite. Get excited.

songs you should have on your iPod – july 7, 2009.

July 7th, 2009 § 4 Comments

I’ve been so ridiculously busy lately that I’ve barely had time to breathe. This is my first day off in a week, so  here is your list of songs to get you through the week.

#1. “Open Your Eyes And Look North” by Dance Gavin Dance off of Downtown Battle Mountain. Good song, relatively mellow for a hardcore song. One of my favorites from DGD. Enjoy. —> Download!

#2. “All Is Full Of Love” by Death Cab For Cutie off of The Stability EP. This is by far one of the greatest songs Death Cab has ever created. It is practically perfect. —> Download!

#3. “The Wanting Comes In Waves” by The Decemberists off of The Hazards of Love. The vocals on this track are pretty great. You get to see the incredible talent of both Colin Meloy and Shara Worden. —> Download!

[I just realized that all of the songs are by artists beginning with the letter "D". While "D" is a fantastic letter in and of itself, this seems rather biased. No more "D"s for this list]

#4. “Mr. Pitiful” by Matt Costa off of Unfamiliar Faces. This song has been featured in several commercials [one for Kia and now one for the new Apple iPhone 3G S] I like this song a lot and I trust you will too. —> Download!

#5. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson off of Thriller. Yeah, I know it seems cliche to put a song by Michael Jackson on here, but the guy was talented. And regardless of whether he touched little kids or not, he was a musical genius. —> Download!

#6. “Float On” by Modest Mouse off of Good News for People Who Love Bad News. This is not only a good song, it’s a good way to live your life. Just “float on” if bad things happen instead of dwelling on them[yes, I'm speaking from experience]. —> Download!

#7. “The Island” by The Starting Line off of Direction. This feels like a love song. Everyone loves a love song. —> Download!

#8. “Colorado Sunrise” by 3oh!3 off of Want! It’s no secret that I like this band, they’re music is catchy. And this song, kind of reminds me of myself. —> Download!

Anyway, that’s it for now. I hope you enjoy. As always, email me suggestions.

Cody.

P.S. Yes, I realized they were in alphabetical order unlike all the other ones.

songs you should have on your iPod – june 22, 2009.

June 22nd, 2009 § 2 Comments

I keep having really stressful weeks and it’s completely killed my drive to blog. Sorry guys. Well here are some songs you should put on your iPod because they are worth it.

#1. “Great White Whale” by Secret & Whisper off of Great White Whale. I was introduced to the sounds of S&W by a good friend and I fell in love with them the moment I heard them [the band not the friend, just to clarify.] —> Download!

#2. “Giving It Away (Acoustic)” by Mae off of Destination: B-Sides. Mae, as I’ve said before, is probably my favorite band. This song is pretty good in it’s normal version [Destination: Beautiful] but I like it more in it’s acoustic glory. —> Download!

#3. “Welcome to Atlanta” by Jermaine Dupri feat. Ludacris off of Instructions. I’m in Georgia and this song was on the radio twice today, so naturally I downloaded it. It’s a pretty good song and Ludacris never disappoints. —> Download!

#4. “Powder to the People” by Dance Gavin Dance off of Happiness. Dance Gavin Dance [incase you've never heard of them] is a hardcore band from California. “Powder to the People” is the final song off their newest album, Happiness. The album features songs with their old bassist [Jason Ellis] but they have a new bassist [Tim Feerick]. Check them out and enjoy —> Download!

#5. “Lollipop” by Lil Wayne off of Carter III. Lil Wayne is a musical god. ‘Nough said. —> Download!

#6. “I Put On” by Young Jeezy off of The Recession. I also heard this song on the radio today and it was better than decent. Young Jeezy is a pretty solid rapper so you’re sure to enjoy this song. —> Download!

#7. “Your Neck” by Alkaline Trio off of Crimson. I just realized the other day that I liked Alkaline Trio [I totally forgot I ever listened to them] so I’ve been enjoying their music lately. —>Download!

JUST FOR FUN

#8. “Love, Love, Love” by The Mountain Goats off of The Sunset Tree. I found The Mountain Goats on Moral Orel [a show on Adult Swim]. The song is really great, as is most of their music. —> Download!

I’ll be writing more often, so get ready people.

Cody.

So I don’t think I’ve written a new post in like, two weeks. I’ve been really busy [took a trip to Pennsylvania and I've been working a lot since I came back]. Hopefully I’ll get back in to some sort of regiment in regards to this site. I might just write a few a week [the iPod suggestions seem to go over really well usually].

Anyway, here are some songs that have been stuck in my head lately due to their infectious/catchy nature:

#1. Any song by Lady Gaga. It’s pretty much common knowledge that Lady Gaga is ridiculous, but her music is super catchy and I kind of like it. —> Call a bluff!

#2. “DON’T TRUST ME” by 3OH3! The lyrics are “..and tell your boyfriend, if he says he’s got beef, that I’m a vegetarian and I ain’t f***in scared of him.” Honestly? Really? Yes. —> Get some beef!

#3. “Heads Will Roll” by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s new album is sexy. —> Lose your head!

#4. “That’s Not My Name” by The Ting Tings. The Ting Tings have a cool name, and this song will make you remember their’s. —> Remember your name!

Enjoy being tormented by these tunes for the next few days. :D

songs you should have on your iPod – may 13, 2009.

May 13th, 2009 § 4 Comments

Sorry I haven’t been posting as regularly as I used to. I just finished finals yesterday and moved out of my dorm today so life has been reeeeeally hectic. Anyway, it’s Wednesday so here are my suggestions for your iPod.

#1. “Sometime Around Midnight” by The Airborne Toxic Event off of The Airborne Toxic Event. This is a great song and it really shows the possibilities for storytelling within a single song.  —> Download!

#2. “Only One” by Yellowcard off of Ocean Avenue. This song makes me cry. —> Download!

#3. “Jersey” by Mayday Parade off of A Lesson In Romantics. I listen to Mayday Parade’s entire album everyday at least once, no joke. They are one of my favorite bands. —> Download!

#4. “I Can’t Do It Alone” by 3OH!3 off of WANT. Honestly, a lot of people don’t like 3OH!3 because they act like total toolbags in their songs [which I don't disagree with], but I like their music and this is a better than decent song. —> Download!

#5. “Existentialism On Prom Night” by Straylight Run off of Straylight Run. This song is fantastical. ‘nough said. —> Download!

#6. “New York, NY” by Chronic Future off of Lines In My Face. If you replace the lyrics “New York City” for “Seattle”, then this song speaks to me. Haha. —> Download!

#7. “Golden Star” by My Brightest Diamond off of Bring Me The Workhorse. Okay, so I saw My Brightest Diamond when they came to the NorVa with The Decemberists in April of 2007. I DID NOT LIKE HER VOICE AT ALL. But, two years later, I like it. She has grown on me and I hope she grows on you too…like a fungus, like a fungus. —> Download!

#8. “You Don’t Know Me (Feat. Regina Spektor) by Ben Folds off of Way to Normal. I found this song on my friend’s Myspace and loved it. Enjoy —> Download!

Well I am going to Pennsylvania for the next 3-4 days so I will be without internet [to my knowledge] so I expect comments/feedback/suggestions when I return. Have a wonderful weekend viewers.
