Happy Day After Valentine’s Day!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine’s Day and that all of your gifts were fantastic. I also hope that all your planning and hard work to make the day/evening special, was all worth it and that it was the best V-Day any of you ever had, because mine was. So clearly, I’m in a pretty good mood today.

On to the music.

I spent a little bit of time looking for some new hardcore bands to listen to and these are the ones I found. There might be a regular/non-hardcore band in here…maybe.

We Came As Romans – iTunes suggested that I listen to We Came As Romans and I was like, “Whatever iTunes, you don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re just a computer program and don’t know what I want to listen to”, but little did I know, iTunes knows me very well.

We Came As Romans is a hardcore band from Troy, Michigan [because being surrounded by lakes and having lots of snow makes you so metal]. They’ve released one full length album, To Plant A Seed [2009], and two EPs, Demonstrations and Dreams. I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to their EPs yet, but their album is really well recorded. They aren’t just an angry hardcore band, they actually have a relatively positive message [their lyrics aren't about death, is essentially what I'm getting at].

I think you’ll enjoy them if you enjoy music.

Motionless In White – I found Motionless In White as a suggestion from my girlfriend’s iPod [and from my iTunes...odd]. I wasn’t really sure what to think when I first heard them because I didn’t really think I liked them. I gave them a few minutes and a few songs and realized that I’m totally okay with what they as a band produce.

Motionless In White is a Screamo/Hardcore band from the Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania area [much like Vice President Joe Biden, and no one gets out of there alive, except Joe Biden]. They have released an EP, The Whorror, and a full length album, When Love Met Destruction [2009].

Before Their Eyes – Once again, I found Before Their Eyes thanks to iTunes [their is a pattern here]. I listened to a bunch of 30-second snippets of their songs and then decided “Hey! I’ll go ahead and download one [or all] of their albums”…so I did. I really love their music. I really like the way that their singing vocals mesh so well with the screaming vocals. The melodic singing doesn’t sound out of place, it sounds like it belongs where it is.

Before Their Eyes is a hardcore band from Findlay, Ohio. They have released two full length albums, Before Their Eyes [2007] and The Dawn of My Death [2009]. They have another album due for release on March 9th titled Untouchable.

August Burns Red – I might have to say that August Burns Red might be my favorite of this list [other than We Came As Romans...but it is definitely between ABR and WCAR]. August Burns Red has something about their music that really makes me want to keep listening. Even their name has an awesome story behind it [their old singer's crazy ex-girlfriend, named August, set his dog, Redd, on fire]. I downloaded their albums and pretty much listened to them all day.

August Burns Red is a hardcore band from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They have released two EPs, August Burns Red EP and Looks Fragile After All EP, and three full length albums: Thrill Seeker [2005], Messengers [2007], and Constellations [2009].

I highly recommend August Burns Red to anyone who enjoys a good hardcore band, or just a good band in general.

I hope you enjoy my choices for the week.

87th generation iPod nano.

(yes, the title is a joke)

The new generation of iPods is coming out soon [this fall] and you should all be pretty excited…or as excited as you can be for the same exact product with one or maybe two new features. [I feel like each generation of iPod is like each new year/version of Madden].

Anyway, the new generation of iPod Nanos looks to actually be the best one since their debut. This one seems to have everything that an iPod [not Touch or Phone] should have always had. I’ll outline its features and let you decide whether or not its worth the $149 [8gb] and $179 [16gb] price tags.

  1. A bigger screen – The screen is now 2.2 inches instead of 1.7. That’s a whole half an inch bigger [and ladies, you know that size matters].
  2. FM Radio – Finally my iPod can let me listen to the radio [although if you have to rely on the radio...you probably need to have a less crappy iTunes library]. Also has a “Live Pause” option that lets you pause the radio.
  3. Voice Over – Your iPod will now tell you what song/artist you’re listening to without you having to look at it. [Not knowing what is on your iPod, ftw]
  4. A pedometer - Now you can track how far you walk/run while you exercise and rock out [forgive me for the 80's coming out in me]
  5. A voice recorder – Now you can be like Capt. Kirk or James Bond; record your thoughts or blackmail your friends. The possibilities are endless…so watch what you say.

Now, last but certainly not the least of the new features, is a video camera. I know what you’re thinking…how did Apple fit a video camera in something the length of my index finger. It [supposedly] takes clean audio, captures crisp video, and probably makes you more attractive to everyone around you.

Green iPod Nano

So what is my verdict? I’m going to buy it. As soon as it comes out, this is going in my pocket.

songs you should have on your iPod – september 16, 2009

September 16th, 2009 § 2 Comments

Mmm…this week’s ear candy! Enjoy.

#1. “Missed the Boat” by Modest Mouse off of We Were Dead Before The Ship Sank. Modest Mouse’s new album, No One’s First and You’re Next, kinda…how do I say this politely…it sucked so bad that I feel like they should pay me for listening to it. This song is off of the album prior to that one and that one was actually pretty good. Anyway, I like this song…so listen to it? —> Download!

#2. “What the Hell is Stipulation” by Reggie and the Full Effect off of Songs Not To Get Married To. My friend Terence got me in to Reggie and the Full Effect…and I love him dearly for it. The entire Songs Not To Get Married To is wonderful. I listen to it practically daily. —> Download!

#3. “Gunpowder” by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears off of Tell ‘em What Your Name Is! Now, I’m not so sure any of you will like Black Joe Lewis, and that’s okay. Its sort of you either really like him/them or you don’t. I do. —> Download!

#4. “Love Drunk” by Boys Like Girls off of Love Drunk. This is Boys Like Girls’ new album, and it is better than decent, but not great [some would classify that as good]. Anyway, this song reminds me of the Jonas Brothers [don't ask why] and is the first single off of the album. I like the song, and I’m sure I could apply it to my life at some point somehow. —> Download!

#5. “Don’t Be So Hard” by The Audition off of Controversy Loves Company. I listened to The Audition like, forever ago and when I got Punk Goes Acoustic; Vol. 2, this song was on there and I was so so so happy. This song is wonderful. —> Download! [This is acoustic version of the song].

#6. “They’re Not Horses, They’re Unicorns” by Bayside off of The Walking Wounded. My manager at my last job put Bayside on one day, and I literally asked if it was Bayside every song for about five or six songs until I realized she was just playing all the songs she had by them. I felt dumb. Anyway, Bayside is wonderful. Enjoy this song…the title has “unicorns” in it, so you can’t help but love it. —> Download!

#7. “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last A Minute On The Creek” by Chiodos off of All’s Well That Ends Well. I heart Chiodos. I made a sweet Pandora radio station revolving around Circa Survive and then Chiodos came up right after and I was stoked. It might possibly be the best Pandora radio station ever, which is why I named it “Perfect Radio”. This song is really really good. —> Download!

#8. “Roadside” by Rise Against off of The Sufferer and the Witness. This song makes me weep. I cry so hard when I hear this song. Good luck. —>Download!

#9. “You’re Not Alone (Piano Version)” by Saosin off of Come Close. This song is so wonderful [this song also came up on "Perfect Radio", thanks Pandora]. Anyway, this song takes the original song and makes it even better [like, over 9000]*. Enjoy. —> Download!

Well those are the suggestions/downloads for the week. Enjoy. As usual, give me feedback —> comments.asoundmind@gmail.com

songs barack obama probably has on his iPod.

September 8th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

I’ve been trying to think of what to write for seriously the better part of four days, and I was given the idea “What would Barack Obama listen to?” (sort of like “What would Jesus do?”) So, here is what I think Obama would listen to, and why.

#1. “My President Is Black” by Young Jeezy: This is a pretty obvious choice to me. Barack Obama is indeed an African American, so he should be proud that he is the first one to be President. He might even be the first president to have a positive rap song written about him. Go you B.O.

#2. “Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta” by Geto Boys: This is what Obama listens to everyday he is in the Oval Office. He takes off his blazer, undoes his tie, and props his feet up on his desk while he smokes a cigar.

#3. “Heat of the Moment” by Asia: When Obama is in front of Congress and things aren’t going his way, he plays this song and everyone joins in. Instant pass on any bill.

#4. Anything by Marvin Gay or Barry White: Everyone has those songs they make love to, and Obama is classy enough to have that stuff on vinyl.

#5. “Jack and Diane” by John Mellencamp: This is Barack and Michelle’s song. They go to Dairy Queen, since there is only one Tastee Freeze on the planet and it is in John Mellencamp’s house [with the Secret Service], suck on chili dogs [with the Secret Service], and listen to this song in the back of their bulletproof limo [with the Secret Service].

#6. “Beat It” by Michael Jackson: Whenever Dick Cheyney rolls by the Oval Office [more like teleports there, because I feel like the Devil can do that] Obama blasts this and they get in a dance off. Obama always wins because Cheyney always breaks his hip.

#7. “Shut the F*** Up” by Cake: Whenever Joe Biden [or the Republicans] opens his mouth, Obama gets this exact expression on his face.

I’m sure there are a lot more songs, since seven songs does not make an iPod. If you think I missed something good, let me know.

Today I am just going to talk about everything I’ve wanted to talk about, but didn’t see the need in devoting a whole post to.

#1. The People of Walmart – I’m not sure if you have heard about this new little internet gem, but The People Of Walmart is my new favorite website. It’s almost like how FMyLife.com was such a huge success last year [mostly with college kids and kids who wish they were college kids]. Seriously though, go to this website and prepare to feel 9000x better about how you look and the way you dress and how fortunate you are to not be a fail. The site basically has users take pictures of “The People of Walmart” which are all the people you’ve always said “What the…” about in your mind. Well they are all in one, nice, open space where they can freely roam about and look ridiculous [WITH COMMENTARY!]. Go there —> www.peopleofwalmart.com

#2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 : Oh my God, if someone doesn’t buy me this game I will punch one kitten, every hour on the hour until they do. This game looks epic. Sadly though…Captain Price is dead. The man who [somehow] survived World War II and then fought in a war Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2against Russian Ultranationalists only to be gunned down in the line of duty. We do see the promotion of “Soap” MacTavish from Sgt. to Cpt. [probably to replace Price]. The game is featuring some pretty sweet voice acting and the multiplayer looks wonderful. This game just looks phenomenal [I'm stockpiling kittens to punch now...so someone better buy it for me, or the kittens get it.]

—> Trailer!

#3. New iPod – No, there isn’t a new one coming out [that I'm aware of...I'll actually look this up later]. No, I need a new one. Mine has run out of space for my music library. I am up to almost 9gb of music, and my 8gb iPod can only seem to hold 7.4gb. So even if it could hold the full 8gb, I’d still be out of luck. So I might be selling my little orange iPod nano [new generation] and get like a classic or wait til something better comes out. All I know is that it was hard to break down my music library for music I wanted on my iPod and music that didn’t make the cut. Donations to The Foundation for Cody’s New iPod would be greatly appreciated.

#4. Upcoming Concerts I’m Stoked For/Going To -

  1. Mae – September 9th in Virginia Beach, Va at the OceanFront. <— Going.
  2. The Decemberists – September 23 at the NorVa. <— Hopefully going?
  3. Mayday Parade – October 31 at the NorVa. <— Going.
  4. Say Anything – November 7 at the NorVa. <— Maybe going.
  5. Brand New – November 13 at the NorVa. <— Going.

I think that’s it for today. Thanks for all the feedback the past couple days. Keep it up guys, you’re making all this a lot easier [if I know you're reading, I'll want to write more]. I think some changes to the site will be happening again…soon. Stay tuned.

Cody.
