lumberjack news – 2.1.11

February 1st, 2011 § 1 Comment

welcome to the lumberjack news.

this week’s “news at a glance” type thing is pretty much a big story about egypt, as well as some other things that i think are particularly important/funny/interesting that i think you should know about.

sit back. enjoy.

waking masses of mummies.

i almost feel like i should devote all of this segment to the growing turmoil and possible catastrophe that is brewing over in the middle east/egypt because the world is going nuts.

protests started on jan. 25th when thousands of citizens were fed up with poverty, government corruption, unemployment, and being ruled for the past thirty years by their dictator, hosni mubarak. these protestors used twitter to organize the locations of their protests and to gain more followers (that pun was intentional).

so what do you do when your citizens are protesting you? you shut down twitter, facebook, cell phones, text messaging, fax machines, and essentially all ways of gaining support and communicating with the rest of the world. good job, hosni. -ed.

who do the people want to take over the country now, though? the answer is the former head of the iaea [international atomic energy agency] and nobel prize winner mohamed elbaradei. he is a moderate, most likely wants democracy, and [to my knowledge] would support israel. he no longer lives in egypt but has since returned to lead the protesters.

egypt is practically israel’s only ally in the middle east. fear is that if a anti-israeli government is established in egypt, the middle east will change it’s name to the missile east and the world will end.

oh, and did i mention that mr. mubarak hasn’t been in the country for practically any of the days that this protest has been going on. granted, i’m not surprised at this at all because if my entire country was carrying signs that told me to “go to hell”, i’d probably hide my tail between my legs and gtfo of egypt.

the military now has control of the country, mubarak is “running” things from an unknown location. i looked at like…twelve articles and all of them either said nothing or speculated his whereabouts [one said london and one said turkey while another said he was in the united states].

wherever you are, mr. mubarak, don’t go back to egypt. gracefully step down, let mr. elbaradei take the reigns, and live out the rest of your life knowing you tried.

new information: hosni mubarak will not be seeking re-election in the fall.

for more on the story go to any news media website on the internet.

snowmaggedon.

on this side of the world, the united states is bracing for what might be the biggest snow storm since…a month ago. there are reports that cities like chicago could see over two feet of snow within 24 hours.

of course, news media outlets are blowing this storm in to what can only be described as…

snowmaggedon.

but it is really just a big snow storm. nothing too big to worry about, especially since it is states that are used to a lot of snow [pennsylvania, new york, vermont, illinois]. virginia isn’t going to see any snow at all. thanks appalachian mountains.

for more on the snow, check out weather.com.

video games might make your kids fat, but it makes them smarter.

studies show that these made me smart.

i would first like to say “suck it” to everyone that ever thought video games made “gamers” stupid or lazy or socially awkward. a recent study shows that gaming makes people smarter and helps them with logic and reasoning skills.

however, studies did not find anywhere that gaming could help you lose weight. running in call of duty sadly doesn’t burn any real world calories. there is also a chance you will still be socially awkward, too…but that is kind of your own choice.

this study is a very good thing though, because maybe it will show all of those strict parents that letting their kids play video games won’t make them idiots.

but please, don’t let your kids play grand theft auto until they can accurately tell the difference between what is fiction and what is reality.

that’s all.

hopefully you know more things now than you did a few minutes ago. as always, feedback is welcomed.

lumberjack news – 10.19.10

welcome to the first edition of lumberjack news.

this is going to be kind of a “news at a glance” type thing where i pick some news stories that i think are particularly important/funny/interesting that i think you should know about.

so grab your coffee and prepare to be filled in.

legalizing pot in california.

on november 2, california voters will vote on prop 19 which will legalize marijuana in the state. i know this sounds like a victory for stoners and college students nationwide, but it isn’t all that it seems. marijuana is already practically legal in california as of now. in the 70s, pot was decriminalized (for small amounts) and in the 90s medicinal marijuana was legalized.

prop 19, however, goes a little further by making it legal for adults 21 years old and above to enjoy smoking pot without fear of being fined (in california) or arrested (essentially everywhere else).

i’m completely for this. i mean, i’m not going to smoke pot, but i don’t see what the huge deal with it is. having a government regulated agency that deals with pot would make it safer for the consumer. and it would eliminate the need for most drug dealers to even exist, which would clean up the streets and eliminate that awkward business relationship entirely.

don’t ask, don’t tell fiasco.

u.s. district court judge virginia phillips issued a worldwide injunction on the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, ending the almost two decade long ban on openly gay soldiers participating in the military. it prohibits the military from asking about a recruit/soldier’s sexual orientation, but it allows them to discharge them if they are openly gay or found engaging in homosexual activity, either on base or in the privacy of their own homes off base.

i think the greatest part of this is that the lawsuit that brought about this ruling, was brought to court by the log cabin republicans. they are just like regular republicans, except they are gay (which makes them better).

this also raises the question: what makes gay soldiers different from straight soldiers? answer: nothing.

zynga harvests user information.

i have to hand it to zynga for developing some of the most addicting facebook games known to man. seriously, farmville is like crack. but it was discovered that digital tomatoes and pomegranates might not be the only thing being farmed.

zynga...you're just the worst.

facebook has developed a bad reputation over the past year for having misleading privacy contract agreements with it’s users. that is roughly 500 million people that are (legitimately or not) at risk of their private information being stolen or used.

the wall street journal (you may have heard of them) is doing an investigatory series on privacy violations by internet corporations. their most recent piece was on zynga and how when you sign in to farmville, mafia wars, cafe wars, etc. etc. etc. they send your information (without you knowing) to dozens of data farming agencies around the world to bolster their databases. they do this so they can email/mail/text/call/tweet/facebook you about products you might enjoy. this is illegal. no matter what your facebook privacy settings are, they send your info regardless.

facebook apparently had no knowledge of this…i’ll believe that when myspace becomes popular again.

that’s all the news i have for today.

let me know what you think about the news. let me know what you think about this type of post: should i keep doing it or stop?

thanks for reading.

ping.

September 2nd, 2010 § 1 Comment

new social networking? yes please.

so i discovered today that iTunes started a social networking site and to be honest…i may have peed my pants a little. [okay a lot]. so of course, like any other normal person i set out to make myself a profile on this new avenue for bitching about my life. i was thinking “hooray! new people to complain to about the random horrible things that happen in my life!”. but my tinkering with ping has left me confused and unimpressed.

ping social network.

ping was launched by apple in 2010.

just like a crack addict…

i pretty much jump through flaming hoops to update/access/check my social networking sites [twitter/facebook/etc.]. and yes, i realize this is a sad way to live life but i honestly can’t help it.

however, when i’m not near a computer or i’m away from the internet, i can function just like a normal member of society.

seriously…i update twitter and facebook like…a dozen times a day [seperately].

but anyway.

i made a ping today. and…well…it is kind of…i don’t know…terrible.

basically it is like a more personal version of purevolume. i mean, i love purevolume because bands post music and all that sort of stuff, but i don’t really need another one.

so how do i actually feel about ping?

i hate it. like, it is cool that i can follow bands and my friends and stuff, but i can do that on twitter…and facebook…and tumblr…and myspace…and every other social networking site that has ever existed forever.

i mean don’t get me wrong, i love Steve Jobs and Apple and the iPod and iTunes and everything like that, but this was a stupid idea. i use my iTunes to listen to music, to buy episodes of adventure time, and to make mix cds. i don’t want to follow bands and chat with my friends.

they just need to fix this and make it more interesting. right now it just seems like something i don’t want to update/check…ever. maybe it’ll break the hold that social networks have over me.

that is all i have to say about that.

i’m off to update facebook.

listen to what i listen to – january 18, 2010.

Familiar territory.

Well I decided I might as well start doing the whole “Music Monday” thing that sweeps the internet every week. I’m going to tell you what I’m listening to, and why you should join me in listening to them too. So, I’m just going to jump right in to it now.

Here are my picks of the week:

Fall Out Boy – I’ve been listening to them off and on all week, they’ve felt more catchy than before and I’m totally okay with my decision to start listening to them again, especially since Folie á Deux was a perfect album in every use of the word. I saw Fall Out Boy live in 2007 when I worked a summer job at a concert venue in Virginia Beach. They played “Beat It” and I died a little. A love was born that night [between FOB and myself].

Bayside – I would listen to Bayside all-day-all-night if I could. They are one of my favorite bands as of late. Shudder was probably one of the best albums of 2008, and possibly one of the best albums of the decade. I used to listen to Bayside when I worked at the beach this summer, which is where I really learned about their music and how much it inspired me to get stuff done.

Explosions In The Sky – I saw one of my friends on Facebook talking about Explosions in the Sky and then I remembered “Hey! I love them!” so I got to work downloading all their albums and enjoying listening to their lovely music. Their music makes me feel really mellow and it always improves my mood during a really bad day [fact: I used to mow grass to their music].

Motion City Soundtrack -It is no secret that I love Motion City Soundtrack [just read the post about their new album]. I find their synthesizers and catchy lyrics fantastic and marvelous. I’ve been listening to Motion City Soundtrack since I got their new album a few days ago and it has essentially been on repeat. Go grab their albums [most notably Commit This To Memory and My Dinosaur Life].

Alesana – Alesana has one of the greatest acoustic versions to one of their songs ["Apology"] and I love the way they tell epic stories over the course of their albums [much like The Decemberists do]. Their new album [I'm reviewing it tomorrow] is their best yet. I actually have a playlist of just Motion City Soundtrack and Alesana going now [all of their albums] and it has been keeping my ears occupied. The stories they tell are always dark and epic, and I’m loving every second of their new work.

Polar Bear Club – I read about Polar Bear Club in two different magazines, Alternative Press and AMP and decided that since their name was perfect and possibly the coolest thing ever, I would listen to and love them. Well…I was only half right. While their name is incredibly awesome, I’m not quite sure that I like them as a band yet. They are labeled as a hardcore band…but they sound a lot like Anti-Flag to me [except without the pretentious anti-government sentiments]. Supposedly Polar Bear Club’s new album has a more hardcore feel to it…so we’ll see what tune I’m singing next time.

Well that is it for the week. Hope you enjoyed my picks. If you have any suggestions, let me know and I’ll give them a listen.

Cody.

My next post…

A review of the brand new Alesana album, The Emptiness.

our little boy is growing up.

December 7th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

My dear friend [and one of our fantastic writers] is growing up, folks. Its true, little Terence now has his own website and let me just say, it is the coolest idea/concept I’ve heard in a long time.

The website is called “Smile Like You’re Dead Inside” and essentially all you do to get on the site, is smile…like there is no more breath in your lungs and no more songs in your heart. The sheer magnitude of the sites launch was incredible. Within a few hours of launch, there were dozens of “happy” smiling faces on the site. [Yes, I was one of those faces.]

Me...smiling...like I'm dead inside.

Trying to smile like I’m dead on the inside was actually really hard [which was weird to me] because it took more focus than I imagined. I figured I could just fake a smile and be all dandy, but I looked either a.) too dead, b.) slightly retarded, or c.) like I was faking.  But I finally came up with the perfect picture [VALIDATION! YEAH!].

Anyway, this morning, Terence had an interview with www.thestar.com, which is an online newspaper [to my knowledge]. He told me [and the rest of Facebook/Twitter] that it went pretty well.

So…I’m impressed. Terence had his site up for LITERALLY two days before he had an interview with someone important. I’ve had this site for…almost two years…no interviews for Cody. But I’m proud of you Terence. Good job! [please don't stop writing for us].

I’m posting something else later today or tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Cody.

the mixtape.

October 16th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

This Is The Type Of Person I Am.

It isn’t any secret that I am a complete sucker for mixtapes…well since technology has found a way to kill everything adorable…the mix CD. There is just something special about someone taking the time to find a bunch of things that other people said, to tell you how they feel about you. The mixtape lets you feel romantic and creative…without actually having to be creative.

But I Digress.

I like making mix CDs…they still feel special because you know…you have to get the music on to your computer and then burn it on to a CD…which is still much less work than the whole “tape recording” thing.

I Have Found The Answer, Brothers And Sisters…

With the inadvertent help of my dear pal Terence, I have discovered 8tracks.com. The concept of 8tracks is that you can make an 8 track [or more] mix, and post it on the site under your profile. You can then embed these little guys all over the internet on various websites in which you have profiles on [I'm looking at you MySpace/Maybe Facebook].

This Site.

Is perfect.

Okay…well maybe not perfect. It has a pretty basic design [sort of like Twitter] and doesn’t offer much as far as social networking goes [unless you want your network to be full of awesome little indie mixtape makers like I do]. It does however, give you the perfect way to make a blog, such as mine, legal as far as music goes.

Sad News…

I’m going to have to stop putting up downloads as often as I do. This will be my new medium for giving you suggestions. I will make a mix and discuss it. I’m sorry…

[I feel like I just lost the last two people that care about this site]

In Closing…

If you love mixtapes…you’ll love 8tracks.com.
