songs you should have on your iPod – july 7, 2009.

July 7th, 2009 § 4 Comments

I’ve been so ridiculously busy lately that I’ve barely had time to breathe. This is my first day off in a week, so  here is your list of songs to get you through the week.

#1. “Open Your Eyes And Look North” by Dance Gavin Dance off of Downtown Battle Mountain. Good song, relatively mellow for a hardcore song. One of my favorites from DGD. Enjoy. —> Download!

#2. “All Is Full Of Love” by Death Cab For Cutie off of The Stability EP. This is by far one of the greatest songs Death Cab has ever created. It is practically perfect. —> Download!

#3. “The Wanting Comes In Waves” by The Decemberists off of The Hazards of Love. The vocals on this track are pretty great. You get to see the incredible talent of both Colin Meloy and Shara Worden. —> Download!

[I just realized that all of the songs are by artists beginning with the letter "D". While "D" is a fantastic letter in and of itself, this seems rather biased. No more "D"s for this list]

#4. “Mr. Pitiful” by Matt Costa off of Unfamiliar Faces. This song has been featured in several commercials [one for Kia and now one for the new Apple iPhone 3G S] I like this song a lot and I trust you will too. —> Download!

#5. “Thriller” by Michael Jackson off of Thriller. Yeah, I know it seems cliche to put a song by Michael Jackson on here, but the guy was talented. And regardless of whether he touched little kids or not, he was a musical genius. —> Download!

#6. “Float On” by Modest Mouse off of Good News for People Who Love Bad News. This is not only a good song, it’s a good way to live your life. Just “float on” if bad things happen instead of dwelling on them[yes, I'm speaking from experience]. —> Download!

#7. “The Island” by The Starting Line off of Direction. This feels like a love song. Everyone loves a love song. —> Download!

#8. “Colorado Sunrise” by 3oh!3 off of Want! It’s no secret that I like this band, they’re music is catchy. And this song, kind of reminds me of myself. —> Download!

Anyway, that’s it for now. I hope you enjoy. As always, email me suggestions.

Cody.

P.S. Yes, I realized they were in alphabetical order unlike all the other ones.

#4. “Soundtrack to Our Movie” by Mae off of Destination: Beautiful. —> Download!

#5. “Castaway” by Punchline off of Just Say Yes. —> Download!

#6. “That’s Incentive” by Death Cab for Cutie off of You Can Play These Songs With Chords. —> Download!

#7. “Skeptics And True Believers” by The Academy Is… off of Almost Here. —> Download!

That’s it. As always, send me suggestions if you’d like —> yoklookie@gmail.com

It’s that time of the week again. The time where I tell you what I think you should be listening to.

Song #1 – “My Mirror Speaks” by Death Cab for Cutie off of The Open Door EP. By the time this post goes out, I hope iTunes releases this song for download, if not however, the pre-order may still be available for purchase for $4.99. [Quintessential Death Cab]

Song #2 – “Kotov Syndrome” by Rise Against off of Appeal to Reason. [Political punk]

Song #3 – “I’m Not Your Boyfriend Baby” by 3oh!3 off of Want. [Alternative]

Song #4 – “Drop It Like It’s Hot” by Snoop Dogg off of R&G [Rythm and Gangsta] : The Masterpiece. [Snoop Dee-ohh-double gee]

Song #5 – “Chattahoochee” by Alan Jackson off of A Lot About Livin’ [And a Little 'bout Love]. [Classic Country]

I hope you enjoyed this week’s list. As always, email me suggestions.

NEW DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE MUSIC!?!

That was my exact response when I woke up this morning and checked my Facebook [a good friend of mine left me a link on my wall, thank you so much Tricia].

Anyway, it’s true. Death Cab for Cutie is releasing the companion album to Narrow Stairs on March 31, titled Open Doors [EP]. Three songs are available for streaming at Stereogum.com, “Little Bribes”, “A Diamond and a Tether”, and “My Mirror Speaks”.

Open Doors EP

The EP’s Track List:

1. Little Bribes
2. A Diamond and a Tether
3. My Mirror Speaks
4. I Was Once a Loyal Lover
5. Talking Birds [Demo]

The songs released so far have been a wide range of the same ol’ Death Cab. [Upbeat acoustic guitar, dark/sad song proclaiming failing love, and something in between]

The EP is available for pre-order off of iTunes and Death Cab’s website now, and will be available for digital purchase on 3/31 [a physical release will follow in suit].

It makes sense why these songs didn’t make it on to Narrow Stairs, but it’s good we get the songs in the end anyway.

[updated 03.26.09] – the fourth track, “I Was Once a Loyal Lover” was released today and it’s not bad. All of the songs have different vibes to them. I like it.

I’m going to start doing a weekly Top 5 songs you should have on your iPod for the week. [actually, keep the songs for good, the list will just last a week]

iRock.

So, here goes!

Song #1 – “A Melody, The Memory” by Mae. This song was released in March as part of the “12 Songs. 12 Months. 1 Goal. Make a Difference” campaign. It is available for a $1 download on their website. [see my other post to learn more about the charity and the songs].

Song #2 – “Transatlanticism” by Death Cab for Cutie off of Transatlanticism. This song just describes the feeling of the season, I think. It’s not quite Spring [so love is not quite in the air, just yet].

Song #3 – “Spit In the Face” by Anti-Flag off of The Bright Lights of America. This song just pumps you up [if you're in to anti-establishment punk rock, which I am]

Song #4 – “Jolene” by The White Stripes. Yes, I know this song was originally by Dolly Parton but I like the White Stripes version better. The sheer fact that Jack White can hit some of those notes is impressive to me. However, don’t look for this song on iTunes [you'll only find a video of the song done live]. Look to Limewire or any other illegal downloading program.

Song #5 – “Gives You Hell” by The All-American Rejects off of their new album When the World Comes Down. I used to listen to the Rejects way back when and I recently rediscovered them. They’ve been making a lot of good songs [and were on the previous version of Rock Band & Rock Band 2]. This song is pretty good.

I hope you enjoy my list, if you have any suggestions of music you like that I should like to, email me or comment me.

I Bought Myself New Candles

December 29th, 2008 § Leave a Comment

I noticed something today, Death Cab For Cutie has only gotten better as a band and that’s a good measure of how talented they are. They were never bad, but now they are just plain great. I like listening to their old stuff, like You Can Play These Songs With Chords and comparing it to their new stuff, like Narrow Stairs and seeing just how much they’ve matured. Not every band can do that; METALLICA is a good example of this. Anyway, that has nothing to do with this post, just a thought.

On to the actual post now. So, as of today, my grandma has been gone for three years. I’ve been in an odd mood all day, like I am every year around this time. Each year gets easier, but this however, has been the easiest holiday season to date. I’ve tried to remember the good times I spent with her, and it’s been pretty effective. I’ve made a lot of new Christmas memories with my friends and my family, and it’s been nice. I actually had a MERRY Christmas and it was nice. I know she’d be happy with how it went this year.

I do still miss her though, and I do try to call her from time to time, but I just chuckle to myself and shake it off. She knows how I’m doing, and I hope she is proud of me.

The new year is coming soon, and 2008 is finally going to be gone. One of the worst years on record will soon be only a memory, and I for one couldn’t be happier.

Cody.
