friday playlist – 2.3.12

February 3rd, 2012 § Leave a Comment

happy friday folks.

i’ve just finished my first week of my last semester and i’ve gotta say, it’s been pretty great. all of my classes are interesting but i know it is going to be a lot of work and a lot of research and just a lot of headaches.

but it’s going to be totally worth it.

and i have a lot of wonderful plans on my day off from work today. i’m going to run some errands and to get some lunch. then i’m headed to the movies to see that new movie with harry potter in it…i mean daniel radcliffe. it’s supposed to be pretty terrifying…so that’s cool…because i totally love being scared for a solid hour and a half…totally…

anyway.

i figured i’d start doing music playlists again because, frankly, i like shoving my music down your throats.

oh i’m just kidding.

actually, sitting down and thinking of what music goes on the list is a lot of fun. so yeah.

enjoy.

  1. the most beautiful bitter fruit – la dispute
  2. boy with a coin – iron & wine
  3. tilde – touche amore
  4. electric feel – mgmt
  5. passenger seat – death cab for cutie

that’s it.

those are my choices for this week. suggestions are always welcome.

i hope all of you have an excellent friday.

  2. “elder goose” by dance gavin dance
  3. “aisle” by the bunny the bear
  4. “its’ for the best” by straylight run
  5. “upward over the mountain” by iron & wine

that’s all.

it was just something quick while i figured out what to wear to work. [dark jeans, black v-neck, purple plaid flannel shirt]

enjoy your day, folks.

most anticipated of 2011: music.

February 6th, 2011 § 4 Comments

this year is going to be magic.

if you’re like me and you’re constantly looking up when the next time good music will be coming to your ears, you know that 2011 is going to be a fantastic year. depending on what type of music you like, this year is either going to be great for you, or it will be lyrically boring. for me, it’s gonna be epic.

top 5 most anticipated.

1. downtown battle mountain 2 by dance gavin dance: i’ve seen them live, i have every single one of their albums, and jonny craig is back in the band. now i’m like a little kid waiting for the recess bell to ring so i can play on the jungle gym. they’ve released two songs so far – “the heat seeking ghost of sex” and “the robot with human hair pt. 2 1/2″ and both are musically spectacular. it sounds like craig brought a little of emarosa [his other band] with him and the two sounds mesh beautifully.

release date: march 8, 2011

2. codes and keys by death cab for cutie: i have a weird relationship with death cab, it seems that i can really only listen to their music when i’m in a period of soul-crippling depression, which is why i’m both excited and nervous for their upcoming album. i sort of feel like death cab is classic “broken up with” music. if you break up with someone, you don’t pop in some plans or transatlanticism, no, you put on some dr. dre or some lil wayne or some and you go out to the club [that was kind of a completely unnecessary side note that had no point. sorry]. anyway, the point is, death cab is releasing their first album since i was in high school and i’m nervous.

release date: spring 2011

3. soul punk by patrick stump: you have to give the man some credit – in four years, fall out boy went from being just another local band to something of a pop-punk powerhouse. sadly, good things never last forever, and in 2009, fall out boy went on indefinite hiatus. that being said, genius never sleeps. patrick stump is currently working on a solo album [and working on getting eerily way too skinny] entitled soul punk. i’ve heard a song off of it and it is actually pretty good, which isn’t any surprise at all. let’s see if “solo” was the way to go.

release date: february 2011

4. “upcoming 4th album” by the devil wears prada: it makes sense that the devil wears prada would go to the studio to record a new album, especially after the success of their latest ep, zombie ep, which was incredible, was about zombies, and came with a sweet t-shirt. details are sort of limited for this one, but when i know more – you will know more.

release date: summer 2011

5. the dudes by the lonely island: this might seem unrelated since all of my other choices were…well…legitimate musical experiences, but there is just something about comedy songs that doesn’t get old. i think their last album, incredibad, was really funny [especially since "i'm on a boat" is one of the greatest songs ever written"] and i’m really excited for this album.

release date: march 2011

i’m sure some of you won’t agree with my choices, but that is why they are mine and not yours. as always, feedback and comments are encouraged: tell me what your most anticipated album/artist is of this year.

thanks for playing.

heavy rotation – 10.21.10

October 21st, 2010 § Leave a Comment

a bit of an off week.

not having what could be considered the “best” of weeks. i’m not sad or upset about anything, just feeling kind of unmotivated. today i’m actually pretty sick.

i walked in to my professor’s office this morning and he said to me “wow, you look like shit.” to which i replied “umm…thanks”. then he told me to go back to my room and sleep and that my absence was excused. college is wonderful.

but all of that is no matter. let’s get down to business.

this week’s heavy rotation.

1. you can play these songs with chords by death cab for cutie: this was their first album, back when they were still a blossoming indie blip on the radar. ben gibbard has proven to be something of an indie rock success story and really changed the way people look at indie music. the success of dcfc also forced people to accept that indie bands can become popular and still be wonderful. and good news – ben gibbard said to

expect a new death cab for cutie album in spring of 2011.

tracks to listen to – “champagne from a paper cup” or “that’s incentive”

2. blue sky noise by circa survive: anthony green is possibly one of the most talented and successful drug addicts to ever pick up a microphone. his voice is easily recognizable over any other singer. his music is amazing. and he and his wife just gave birth to the messiah.

side note: i know what you’re thinking “but cody! every rock band from the 60s/70s/80s was on drugs and they were good!” and you’re wrong. most of what happened between the 60s and the 80s wasn’t music – it was a series of seizures and sound waves. that’s it.

tracks to listen to: “get out” or “fever dreams”

3. absolutes by barcelona: i saw barcelona in concert a few years ago and they are some of the nicest dudes around. this album is practically perfect and is definitely one of the best albums of 2007. the album reminds me a lot of high school, but i can look back on it now with completely different eyes.

tracks to listen to: “time to mend” or “fall out of trees”

4. sometimes things just disappear by polar bear club: i heard about polar bear club in alternative press in an article about hardcore/punk bands that no one knew about. their name is awesome, their music is pretty good, and i look like i belong in that band. i met them at warped tour this summer and they’re genuinely nice dudes.

tracks to listen to: “heart attack at thirty” or “eat dinner, bury the dog, and run”

5. invented by jimmy eat world: i finally got my hands on a copy of the new j.e.w. album and it is phenomenal. i’m going to write a review for it soon. but just know that it is a really impressive piece of music. well worth the wait.

tracks to listen to: “anais” [available on the deluxe version of the album] and “invented”

red dead redemption: undead nightmare.

that is the list for this week. send me your suggestions and what not to theindielumberjack@gmail.com.

enjoy your day friends.- the lumberjack.

my next post: i’m going to talk about some video games. i’m a nerd. it’s what i do.

the fall of death cab for cutie.

September 17th, 2009 § 21 Comments

I never thought it would happen…but can’t listen to Death Cab for Cutie ever again. No, they didn’t break up (which actually might be better than what they really did). No, none of the members died in a car/bus/plane crash. No, they just sold out. They sold their soul to the devil that is Twilight.

Meet Me on the Equinox

“Meet Me on the Equinox” is the first single off of the New Moon soundtrack. I’m not going to lie and say the song is terrible and atrocious and a travesty because its not. Its a decent song. Its even a decent song by Death Cab standards.

What breaks my heart, though, is that Ben Gibbard sold out. Death Cab for Cutie is the epitome of indie rock success. They just recently went to a major label after being on an indie one for nearly a decade. I can’t help but think this is all Zooey Deschanel’s fault. Everything was just fine in the world of perfect indie rock heaven until she came along.

Caution: This might come off as a “man crush” towards Ben Gibbard. I will assure you that it is not…it is a real crush.*

Anyway, since she came along…they haven’t come to Norfolk [they haven't come to Norfolk since 2006, so this is purely speculation]. I’m listening to Transatlanticism and Plans just because I feel like I need to mourn the loss of the Ben Gibbard that I know and love. Their last good album, mind you, was Plans [2005]. Long before he met her.

So my thesis is this: If Ben Gibbard was not engaged to Zooey Deschanel, terrorism would stop.

That’s all. I sadly can’t listen to Death Cab ever again…oh well. Good thing I have all their albums…and a shirt…and a poster, eh? I’m going to put them all in a shoebox and burn them…just like if he broke up with me :(

Cody.

artists i’d recommend – july 9, 2009.

July 9th, 2009 § Leave a Comment

I felt that it was a good idea to do one of these today [don't ask me why, it's just what I was feeling]. So I have two artists that I highly recommend to anyone I meet [not exactly true, but I should start doing this].

So…enjoy?

#1. Death Cab For Cutie – There is so much that I could say about Death Cab For Cutie…but I don’t know where to start. DCFC is a Seattle, Wa based indie-rock band of the epic nature. [OH MY GOD DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE IS ON TV WHILE I'M WRITING THIS!] Founded in 1997, they’ve been cashing checks and breaking necks in the musical community ever since. They have six full length albums, five EPs, and one demo. They are basically the epitome of indie-rock success. [if you haven't figured it out yet, I sort of have a thing for Death Cab]. I highly recommend them to you, yes you, right now. Go listen. Please.

Death Cab For Cutie

Albums-

Something About Airplanes (1998)
We Have The Facts And We’re Voting Yes (2000)
The Photo Album (2001)
Transatlanticism (2003) <— This is my favorite album by them
Plans (2005) <— This is when I really discovered them. I heard “Soul Meets Body” on the radio and thought it was The Postal Service (due to Ben Gibbard’s voice)
Narrow Stairs (2008)

“Transatlanticism” <— This is my favorite song by them I think.

#2. Mae- Mae is an alternative band from Norfolk, Va [So basically they are my hometown heroes, if you will] founded in 2001. I’ve met 2/3 of the band [their drummer for an interview I did for my college newspaper and their bass player at the concert a few months ago] and they are really nice, really cool people to have a conversation with. Their music on the other hand, is also phenomenal. Their music is…hard to describe. Each album [of the three] has felt different in the way the music is delivered. The Everglow, for example, feels kind of like a story [it has a prologue and an epilogue] while Singularity isn’t really story-driven, but the songs seem more romantically directed. I highly recommend Mae for anyone who likes music.

The two guys on the right, are no longer in the band.

The two guys on the right, are no longer in the band.

Mae is doing a special charity project where they release a song every month for the entirety of 2009. So far they’ve released six songs and raised over $47,000. You should support them and what they are doing.

Albums-

Destination: Beautiful (2003)
The Everglow (2005) <— I want this album cover tattooed on my arm.
Singularity (2007)

“Just Let Go” <— By far my favorite song they’ve ever produced, ever.

There you go. Listen and enjoy.
