ear candy – october 5, 2009.

iPod Suggestions/Ear Candy will officially start being posted on Mondays now. It didn’t make any sense to give you music suggestions for the week…at the end of the week. This can also coincide with #musicmondays on Twitter. Enjoy!

This weeks list took me a long time to figure out for some reason. I’m not sure why. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this week’s music.

#1. “Get Up” by Mayday Parade off of Anywhere But Here. The song I really wanted to post…probably would have just been awkward, so I’ll post this one. This is off their new album, and it is really catchy. I’ll post a review of Anywhere But Here tomorrow…when I am legally allowed to have it. Enjoy “Get Up” —> Download!

I didn't say anything about Alesana this week...but I love this album cover.

#2. “There’s No Penguins In Alaska” by Chiodos off of All’s Well That Ends Well. I’ve been on a really big Chiodos kick lately. I got all three of the Chiodos albums this weekend when I was in Delaware and All’s Well That Ends Well is probably my favorite one [although Bone Palace Ballet is growing on me]. I also really like the name of this album, its awesome. Enjoy “There’s No Penguins In Alaska” —> Download!

#3. “Swing, Swing” by The All-American Rejects off of their debut album, The All-American Rejects. I have always loved this song, and this band. I don’t care what sort of stigma exists with being a fan of this band, they have always been really good. This song is just a really great piece of music. I think you’ll like it, if you already don’t. Enjoy “Swing, Swing” —> Download!

#4. “So Peter, You’ve Become A Pirate” by The Scene Aesthetic off of Building Homes From What We’ve Known. What could you possibly hate about a song with a title involving adopting a life of freedom and piracy. You know who hates pirates? The devil, Hitler, Ted Bundy, and every other serial killer since the dawn of time. So enjoy this song. Enjoy “So Peter, You’ve Become A Pirate” —> Download!

#5. “Sleep With Me” by City Sleeps off of Not An Angel. This song reminds me of Spring 2008, what I like to call the low point of my life. I bought this album on iTunes right before I went on a camping trip…that camping trip..well I don’t really want to talk about that trip. It had it’s moments. Anyway, this song came on my Pandora radio today and it made me think of that. I like this song, this band, and this album. Enjoy “Sleep With Me” —> Download!

#6. “Smells Like Kevin Bacon” by iwrestledabearonce off of It’s All Happening. I love iwrestledabearonce. Not only is their name awesome [because it is the coolest name ever], but their music is actually really good too. I think you’ll like this song. There is even a remix for it by Benjamin Weinman of the Dillinger Escape Plan]. Enjoy “Smells Like Kevin Bacon” —> Download!

Side note: Their lead singer is a girl…now listen to the song with an all new awareness.

That’s all for today. It isn’t the usual suspects [I'm trying to expand my horizon as well as yours]. I hope you enjoyed it.

Cody.

My next post…

A review of Mayday Parade’s new album Anywhere But Here. Did I like it? Did I hate it? You get to find out.

So I originally thought I’d be able to post things in Delaware…well I was wrong. God apparently hates me and won’t let me get the internet. Right now, I’m at a Starbucks, stealing internet from someone else. [I don't have AT&T and don't want to spend $3.99 for two hours of internet].

Anyway, here I am at Starbucks, frantically trying to email my professor my outline for my speech [about the Hezbollah in Lebanon]. Enjoy. Posts to pick back up Sunday or Monday [including your list of songs, don't worry guys, I didn't forget.]

Update: I just got the neighbor’s internet…by cracking their password…on the first try. I’m the man.

i did a bad thing.

Anywhere But Here album.

So…I did a bad thing. I torrented Mayday Parade’s new album, Anywhere But Here. I fought the urge to do this for four days…and then the pressure to know if the fruits of my painful longing were as delicious as I thought they were, got me.

Now before you judge me [you know who you are], I’m going to buy Anywhere But Here when it comes out on October 6th. I’ll do this for two reasons…

  • Number One: My conscious will get the best of me and I’ll feel terrible.
  • Number Two: Mayday Parade is my favorite band…so I pretty much buy everything they release without any discretion.

This post is not a review. The review will come in a few days…most likely after October 6th. This album…is amazing, and I’ll tell you why soon.

the brand new brand new.

October 1st, 2009 § 1 Comment

Its a sad and dark day America. I recently got the new Brand New album and…well it moved me so much, it made me cry. Sadly, these moving tears were not of joy; they were of painful sorrow and agony.

Background.

Brand New is an alternative band from Long Island, New York. The band was formed in 2000 and still maintains all its original members. They have released four albums:

  • Your Favorite Weapon [2001]
  • Deja Entendu [2003]
  • The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me [2006]
  • Daisy [2009]

Of their four albums, by far the best one is Deja Entendu. It is practically a perfect album. I can listen from start to finish without skipping a single track. The song “Play Crack the Sky”, which is the last track on the album, is just a fitting end to the CD. But I’ve stalled enough…

Let’s Talk About Daisy.

Daisy is nothing like anything you’ve ever heard from Brand New, and I think that is part of the problem. Every time I listen to Brand New, I expect it to be Deja Entendu, and it never is.I know that it is wrong to compare something a band does to something they did before [kind of like Linkin Park...except Linkin Park used to be good and now they are atrocious].

Daisy is an 11 track audio…”adventure”, in the sense that if you were going on an adventure completely unprepared. It is sort of like bringing a machete and khaki shorts to the Arctic [polar bears love khaki shorts]. “At The Bottom” is my favorite track, although…all of the tracks are beginning to grow on me. And that is what I wanted to talk about.

Brand New - Daisy

Sort of Like A Parasite.

Daisy has grown on me over the past week. I originally wanted to write this review the day I got the album…but I was coaxed in to waiting and listening a little more.

Upon my first listen…my ears bled.

On my second listen…I still didn’t like it.

But on my third listen…I kind of liked it.

The album really has to grow on you [much like a parasite...but in a good way?], but that isn’t a bad thing. Music is one of those things that you need to give some leeway to and give it some time.

Final Thought?

My final thought on the album is that it is not a bad album, though it is not a great album either. My suggestion is that you find a friend with the album and listen to it that way, I wouldn’t necessarily buy it unless you are a devote fan.

The only advice I can give you on listening to this album: If you’re a fan of Brand New or someone who at the very least has heard some of their older material, listen to Daisy as if you’ve never heard Brand New before. If you anticipate hearing the same thing you heard on the last album, it’ll be a metaphorical kick in the testicles.

Enjoy at your disgression.

Cody.
