When Good Music, Goes Bad

March 5th, 2009 § 13 Comments

So you’ve all undoubtedly heard of the crime against humanity known as the Twilight series. Well, I’ve never read the books nor have I seen the movie, but I have heard the music. That’s only because most of the music was by artists I kind of liked/kind of respected. This is what happens, When GOOD music, goes BAD.

Here is the track listing from the Twilight movie soundtrack:

FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.

FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.

1. “Supermassive Blackhole” by Muse
2. “Decode” by Paramore
3. “Full Moon” by The Black Ghosts
4. “Leave Out All the Rest” by Linkin Park
5. “Spotlight” [Twilight Mix] by Mutemath
6. “Go All the Way” [Into the Twilight] by Perry Farrel
7. “Tremble for My Beloved” by Collective Soul
8. “I Caught Myself” by Paramore
9. “Eyes on Fire” by Blue Foundation
10. “Never Think” by Rob Patterson
11. “Flightless Bird, American Youth” by Iron & Wine
12. “Bella’s Lullaby” by Carter Burwell

First off, *tisk tisk* Paramore. You’ve committed a sin TWICE. I can’t believe I ever enjoyed playing your music on RockBand. Actually…the fact that your music was on RockBand saves you from eternal damnation.

But Linkin Park, the fact that your music was on RockBand and this soundtrack is unforgivable. Linkin Park used to be one of my favorite bands [during the "In the End" years], but since then…they’ve committed too many atrocities to the music community to be forgiven.

I really like[d] Mutemath until I saw this. See, they already had a song called “Spotlight”, so rather than letting the ogres and trolls who put this movie and soundtrack together just use the song, they had it remixed specifically for the movie. No Mutemath..no.

IRON & WINE? I saw this, and my jaw dropped slightly.

Now, half of these other artists, I haven’t ever heard of, which means that the average adolescent teenage zombie [excuse me, "vampire"] that enjoyed this film, probably hasn’t either.

Here is the main point: You can’t make a soundtrack that is better than the film. Granted, you make 2-3 times more money from it, you lose your soul 5-10 times faster.
